The group I decided to join is called one can at a time. My grandpa owned a bar in my hometown and he was very big on recycling. He took all of the money he would make from recycling cans and donate it to local charities. He no longer owns the bar but he still recycles everyday. I have always been to lazy to recycle because it was so much more convent to just thrown the cans in the trash but when you think about it, its like throwing money away. I am going to start recycling at my apartment. I am also going to start promoting recycling around campus. Its amazing how many cans I see go straight to the trash can at parties on the weekends. I am going to start collecting all of the cans after parties with my friend Kellie. We are going to take bags of cans to the recycling center and donate the money we make to Riley's Children Hospital.

Great idea, this is really something more people should be interested in. I'm like you, amazed at the amount of cans I see just tossed (myself included, I admit). This is a topic that can touch everyone despite their views and way of life. I would see if you could get literacy that tells how many tons of aluminum gets tossed each month/year and say what could be done with that. That would catch people's attention for sure. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis does sound like a good idea, and I'm glad that you're taking a stand on it. My friend got me into recycling. How do you plan to make your stance on recycling Public? How are you going to let people know during your Public Sphere what they should do, and how will you inform them? I agree with the what the other person said for you to do. Also, I think you should hand something out like... your information about Recycling on recycled paper. Also, look online because there are people say that recyclying is just a big conspircy, and that it's waste of energy, and that it doesn't really help the environment. I suggest that you just read up on comments like those, because there are those people that feel that way on campus. Also, maybe you could make something out of recyclable items and pass them out. Nothing expensive though of course.
ReplyDeleteWe are going to make a short video about how many cans are thrown in the trash just on a college campus. We are going to go a party and film all of the beer cans that are just tossed in the garbage or thrown into yards. I thought about making cards to pass out at parties that say something about if you save the tabs off of every can you use and fill up a milk jug you get a free keg! Shocking i know but its 100% true. I think it will motivate college students to start recycling!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many reasons why we should recycle! According to http://www.tcnj.edu/~goeke2/whyrec.htm
1.Recycling reduces our use of landfills and incinerators because it reduces the amount of garbage we throw away by 25-50%!
2. Recycling protects our heatlh and environment because it removes harmful substances and pollution from the waste stream, which is all of the waste or garbage in our community.
3. Recycling conserves our natural resources because it reduces our need for raw materials. For example, if we recycle paper we don't have to cut down as many trees.
4. Recycling saves energy. When we make new paper from old paper, we use 60% less energy than making it from virgin timber.
5. Recycling saves $$$$$$$$$. We throw away 27 billion glass containers each year. Glass is 100% recyclable and can be used over and over again. The process of making new glass from old glass is very efficient and produces hardly any waste or unwanted byproducts.
That's a good idea, but won't you get in trouble for saying that if you collect such and such cans you can get a free keg? I think that USI staff members would feel that you're promoting alcohol use on campus, and you could get in trouble for that. Also, if you have a video of you and other members at a party where there's alcohol, your teacher may frown on it. I just don't want you to get in trouble for your project. Instead, maybe you use statistics, like the ones you already have. Also, one person commented on my blog about what I should do for my Public Sphere, and she gave me the idea to make a shirt. All you would have to do is go to Wal-Mart and buy a plain white t-shirt, and maybe get some iron-on patterns and write on their what your cause is. That way people that won't be at your public sphere could at least see what you represent.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good start to a good habit. Everyone knows that the earlier you start recycling, the better it would be for paper, plastics, and metals. It's pretty cool that your grandparents were promoting recycling before you could even know what it is. You should emphasize on how easy it is to recycle. I think just a couple of people, like you and your friends, could start something really big around campus for many students that have never recycled before.
